TRDIENT TACTICAL TARGET SYSTEM
Patented #5222741
By Specialized Target Systems

What it looks like:

Three dimensional, positionable target of human shape and size that can be used to represent men, women, and children. The adult is the size of 5' 10" person weighing 185 lbs.. Separate attachments can be added to create a female target that include breasts and an abdomen that simulates pregnancy. The child stands 4' tall and is the size of an average 6-10 year old.

The target pieces work as a system so that they can be added to, interchanged, and only damaged parts need to be replaced when worn out. The arms and legs can easily be removed and interchanged allowing for a variety of positions. The target is jointed at the shoulders and hips, and the arms contain a thin wire that allows for realistic positioning. Legs come in either a one-piece, straight design or a two-piece design jointed at the knee. Hands are molded in an open grip to hold a variety of threatening or non-threatening objects.

Target without weatherproofing paint is a non-racial solid gray color. Target with weatherproofing paint is a Caucasian flesh tone.

What it's made of:

Dense urethane foam that is pliable and self-sealing rather than rigid so that when target falls over, it doesn't crack or break apart. The urethane foam used is ultra-violet resistant so that prolonged exposure to sunlight won't degrade the target. The foam is also flame retardant so contact shots can be made without burning the target. Weatherproofing paint is a synthetic rubber material that coats the outside of the target to keep it from absorbing rain if used outdoors.

How it works:

Suspended Model: The target contains two separate cavities which are accessible from the rear. The first is an eight inch circle in the upper chest area. The second is a four inch cavity in the head. An inflated balloon is inserted in the cavity of choice or both and a cord is attached from the balloon to an overhead support. The inflated balloon is what holds the target up in a hanging position. When proper shot placement pops the balloon, the target drops from the support and falls over. If the balloon is not hit, the target remains standing. The placement and rounded shape of the "hit zone" allows the target to react to shots from any angle; side, quartering, and rear. The target falls slowly enough to look realistic and allow for multiple shots to be fired. The instructor can vary the number of shots required to make the target fall by stacking two or three balloons in the cavity and the target will not fall until they have all been shot.

Free Standing Model: It's the same target with the same cavity as the suspended model except that the legs have a rigid rod inserted down through the center to support the target standing up. The leg rods are attached to a metal stand for stability on uneven ground. In place of the balloon in the cavity, an old bullet proof vest is used. This allows for the engagement from any angle and no ricochet of rounds. When the vest is shot, the target falls over. Like our other target, this one can be shot from any angle and only hits to the bullet proof vest will cause it to react.

How long it lasts:

Our oldest (and most shot up) test target has taken over 2500 rounds and is still in working order. While the target will be full of holes, this does not affect the function. There is no need to patch old holes to see where each new shooter is hitting, because hits are gauged solely by target reaction. If desired, we can refurbish your target by putting a new front half on the torso, neck, and head portions. Sometimes joints get shot and need to be replaced so we sell repair parts that will keep your targets up and running. Ball ammunition is recommended and if hollow points are used, the life of the target will be significantly shorter.

Where it can be used:

Indoor ranges, outdoor ranges or clearing houses. Weather does not affect performance with the exception of heavy rain. The foam acts like a sponge and will become heavy when rain soaked. We recommend that you keep them dry and let them dry out before using if they do become rain soaked. If they will be exposed to rain frequently, we recommend our water resistant, rubber coated target. *Bullets will pass through the target so a backstop is required.

Portability:

Suspended model (no metal stand) weighs 12 lbs. and can easily be carried and moved around. Free-Standing model (with metal stand) is about 15lbs. more, but still completely portable. The arms and legs can be removed for transport and/or storage.

Accessories:

To add realism, most Tri-Tac users dress the targets using cast-off clothing (size large works best for the adult).Masks and/or wigs can be added and Specialized Target Systems offers a variety of styles of latex hood type masks that cover the whole head as well as various wigs. For shoot/don't shoot exercises, toy guns, cameras, radios and knives work well when placed in the target's hands. Toy police badges pinned to a shirt are also effective. To represent a female target, use a female mask or wig together with our female attachment kit. The kit consists of breasts and a "pregnant" abdomen made of soft foam that you attach to the front of the adult target with Velcro. Our child target is usually used as a non-combatant, so it is designed a little differently. The proportions are realistic and the facial features are distinct. The chest cavity is a 4" diameter circular hole that holds a smaller round balloon. Otherwise, the features are the same as the adult. For military use requiring a thermal signature, we offer a vest that target wears that when connected to a car battery, heats up to about 10 degrees warmer than ambient temperature. Vest will take many hits without losing it's heating capacity. For added realism, talk-back capability can be added. An electronic box containing your own prerecorded message is placed near target and is activated by shooter's movement. Message can be changed as desired.

Updating or changing target models:

We are always trying to improve and upgrade our targets. We come up with new ideas that lead to new styles of targets being offered. Because the parts of the different models are mostly interchangeable, if you want the newer version it doesn't have to mean a whole new target. For example, the suspended model can be converted to the free standing model with the addition of rigid legs and a metal stand. Bendable arms or legs can be ordered and interchanged with straight ones for versatility in positioning the target. Shorter stands or flopper style stands can be ordered and used with the target's legs removed to simulate people at different heights and provide targets that react in different ways.

Customizing:

If the standard Tri-Tac models don't fit your needs, tell us what your requirements are and we will do our best to meet them. Some examples of customized targets we have made are the sniper model with the head cavity enlarged and rounded. For the novice students who get frustrated at the small diameter of the "hit zone", we make an 8" diameter circular chest cavity that is cut through the target from front to back. This also makes reset time very quick for the suspended target user. For PR-24 or active counter measure practice, lead weight can be added to make the target heavier and harder to knock down. We also can adapt our arms to most targets available, such as Tactical Ted and Box Targets.
